In the famous words of Joni Mitchell, sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. And soon, the privilege of fee-free entry into many countries within the European Union will be a thing of the past for United States citizens.

While lost luggage and flight delays are the grievances du jour, starting in 2024, 30 European nations, including top summer destinations like France, Italy, and Greece, will require visiting nationals to be processed through the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). The digital form, which can be filled out online or via the ETIAS mobile application, is connected to your passport for three years or until it expires—whichever is soonest.

Originally proposed in 2016, the ETIAS system is an enhanced security measure similar to those already in place in the U.S. and Canada. Valid authorization allows for short-term stays for visitors, up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

But don’t get frazzled or ditch those travel essentials just yet. The site declares that “most applications will be processed within minutes,” and the fee is set at just under $8 per person, at the current exchange rate. (Some travelers also may be exempt from the fee.)
